Kyle Erickson – Director of Special Education – Northwest RIC
Kim Johnson – Director of Special Education – Thief River Falls School District
Positive relationships are a powerful intervention. The students who need those relationships the most can be the hardest ones to connect with. This presentation will focus on working with students who present
challenging behaviors. Proactive, positive-based strategies and interventions for supporting behavior change will be discussed.
11:00 – 12:30 (Academic Supports)
Jake Seuntjens – Education Specialist - Northwest Service Cooperative
Whether working in a one-on-one capacity or supporting groups of students to reinforce previously taught concepts, paras have a great opportunity to impact the academic success of students. This session will cover best practices in supporting students in attending to academic content and learning new material. We will cover accommodations addressing the practice of changing the ways students demonstrate their learning and how the information is accessed, as well as modifications of the curriculum and the need for changing what the student is expected to learn.
12:30 – Lunch
1:00 – 3:00 – Communications between Para’s and Teachers
Gina Drellack – Education Specialist – Northwest Service Cooperative
Paraprofessionals and teachers work together for student success. Like any good partnership, communication is crucial to accomplishing and continuing this. And, like any cooperative effort, good communication unfortunately doesn’t happen magically. In this session participants will learn approaches for an intentional atmosphere of partnership with heart through communication, appreciation, and assertiveness.
