What is
a standard? How different are the newly
revised 2011 Social Studies Standards from the 2004 standards? What is a civic skill, the “circular flow
model”, or “TODALSS”? What are the
literacy standards and how do they apply to me?
Participants will explore the standards for
the social studies classroom and also integrate the ELA Literacy in
History/Social Studies standards throughout the days’ activities to demonstrate
just how easy it is to simultaneously address social studies and literacy
standards.
Along with an overview of the revised social
studies standards, the workshop will include a
Q & A session on the standards, a model lesson, examples of reading and
writing strategies that can be easily be integrated with social studies
lessons, time for you to thoroughly review the standards at your grade level
and multiple opportunities to work with other teachers to share ideas about how
to address the new requirements. Come
prepared to ask questions!
