PROFESSIONAL ETHICS AND PERSONAL VALUES

Target Audience:  Social workers in all practice settings, school counselors, psychologists

Purpose: Identify the many ways in which the personal values of human services professionals may affect their worldview, and consequently affect how that person understands and implements the ethical guidelines of their profession.

Objectives

  1. Review the six core values of the NASW Code of Ethics;
  2. Identify specific ways in which a professional’s personal values, including some that are hidden from the individual, may affect how ethical guidelines are implemented.
  3. Identify specific ways in which failure to clearly identify and understand our own values may lead to inadvertent ethical dilemmas.
  4. Discuss specific reasons why individual values clarification is needed to enable professionals in the human services to understand how their personal values and worldview affect implementation of ethical guidelines.
